What should you do if your beloved teacher rose from the dead after his unjust execution? Thanks be to God, the disciples didn’t really have time to think about that after Jesus met them and answered that question for them by giving them the Great Commission.

This week’s top 5 list details the Great Commission from various angles and helps us better define what it is, and focus our attention to this great call of God.

5. Matthew 16:18-20

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

After the Lord rose again, he called his 11 remaining disciples to the mountain, but it says in verse 17 that some doubted. Whatever they doubted really didn’t matter to Matthew (or Jesus). Matthew quickly changes the focus from the doubtful disciples over to Jesus. He literally makes us fix our eyes on Jesus- the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. And when we do, we see his response to our doubts- faith and the future.

He truly believed that they would follow so he gets right to the point, not worrying about their doubts now but refocusing their eyes on their works and future fruit.

He says I have all authority, so go out in my name and help the lost be found.

4. Luke 15:31-32

31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'”

As the father here represents God, we see that God is with us- the son who’s obeying him, God is with his child. This is undoubtedly true, but are we the ones with God? When we’re truly with him, we share his heart towards the lost- running to the one still far off and celebrating his or her return with such a great celebration.

Some Commentaries around like 15 tell of the rarity of middle eastern Families eating meat. A calf was especially rare, so in a situation like this, a great party would be thrown where the whole village would be invited. This is God’s joy when his children come home.

3. Luke 24:44-49

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

This is amazing when you really think about it. Jesus was spoken of long ago in the prophets, but he says here, the fulfillment of what was written about him is found in the preaching of repentance for the forgiveness of sins in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
The 11 were “witnesses of these things.” and we are today, and like them, wee too have been sent the promise from the father to empower us for fulfilling this. Someone once said, God doesn’t call the qualified but qualifies the called. AMen.

2. Mark 16:15-18

15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

This view of the great commission really captures the powerful Jesus Mark displayed in his Gospel. These words are literally Gospel Truth, so we see that, we are called to give salvation to those who believe, and the ones that reject are left behind in their condemnation. God is faithful, so we leave them knowing that he will work with the seeds we planted and by faith we believe some other saints will win them over to Christ. But the ones who believe, they are anointed with the power from on high- the Holy Spirit- and moving out in that power, show these amazing signs.

1. 1 Corinthians 13

13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

I think this is an unsung passage about the great commission. Even the most awe inspiring act of spiritual power is rendered worthless if its divorced from love. In the end, we preach the truth- man’s fall, the sinful state this world is in, but always we end with God’s great love for this fallen world. We make God known through Jesus who he sent, and we pour out God’s longing heart to those still far off so, they who are lost, dead in their sin, can be found and alive again. This is God’s love. This is the great commission.

AM International is considering various strategies for mass evangelism and successful gathering of students. One method that AM considered in the past was students volunteers. This idea has proven to be most relevant when considering the desire for young people to be involved in something meaningful.

Surveys have indicated that 21st-century youth are more interested in doing work that is meaningful and impactful, more than work that pays well. Their hearts are thirsty to contribute to something that matters and has lasting effects. AM believes that gathering student volunteers on and off the campus can be a strategy for raising potential missionaries and Bible teachers.

Student volunteers have been crucial towards the development of world evangelization. The 19th century marked a significant change in world missions and it began by the mobilization of college students who volunteered their time. The Student Volunteer Movement (SVM) was launched in 1886 and was lead by Dwight D. Moody, among other pioneers. This movement was simple– the teachers trained and thought masses of students about the Bible and mission and later recruited candidates who were willing to go out as a missionary.

One motto of the era was “Christ means that all shall go, and shall go to all.” They encouraged lay people, even young students to participate in the world of mission.

AM wishes to revive the hearts of young student missionaries and mobilize students towards world evangelization. AM’s vision is to utilize student’s gifts and ripe passion to evangelize the world.

Please pray for the AM HQ to materialize this strategy and introduce it effectively. May God continually plow the land and lead the ministry towards prepared and wandering souls.

This is part 2 in the multi-part series of articles that focuses on practical practices that can help Christians out in their walk of faith. Today we talk about goal setting and how this affects our spiritual life and some small steps to help alter them for the better.

Quotes from in this article will come from excerpts from the critically acclaimed book Atomic Habits By James Clear, an author I have am a big fan of for his writing’s on Habits and psychology. The habit I will focus on is what some may call “grandiose goal setting.” In layman terms, its to set the bar too high with your goals. Even God doesn’t work in big, fast linear fashion, but tells us that this grand and amazing final destination- His Kingdom- starts as a mustard seed( Talk about small). Often senior Pastor David said set a big goal- but break it down in small increments. We have all heard things like this from one source or another and likely agreed, but, in practice, it’s natural to go the complete opposite direction,

On one hand, it makes perfect sense to have really lofty, big goals when we think about it. We do serve the one true God- an Infinite one at that. But though it is a great thing to simply look at the God like that, and take him at his word, it would be faulty logic to simply look at certain verses, maybe even isolated out of context and think that we can do huge jobs.

So what’s an effective way to break things down into smaller, more manageable undertakings? Let us evaluate The Two- Minute Rule.

Many people who seek to upgrade their work ethic with productivity hacks( actions that help you get the most out of your work day) have testified to the power of using this trick. But what exactly is it, and why use it?

“The Two-Minute Rule states “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.”

You’ll find that nearly any habit can be scaled down into a two-minute version:

● “Read before bed each night” becomes “Read one page.”

● “Do thirty minutes of yoga” becomes “Take out my yoga mat.”

● “Study for class” becomes “Open my notes.”

● “Fold the laundry” becomes “Fold one pair of socks.”

● “Run three miles” becomes “Tie my running shoes.”

Why is this powerful for us in faith? For starters, the outward nature of our works as ministers isn’t much different than anyone else in this world. We still face the same natural physical limits. We still have the same cognitive demand on us as we strive to focus and cultivate plans and ideas, systems to get us to our goals( and systems are very important and will be studied in our next article). ANd finally, the two minute rules really has a domino effect.

An example for when using the two minute rule is when I started the habit of reading in as a passenger during car rides. I placed C.S Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia in the shotgun( seat next to driver) seat and made a rule that every time my wife and I drove anywhere, I would read 1 page of the book. Over the course of a week or 2 of doing this, I started to feel as if 1 page wasn’t enough. So I kept going till I was reading full chapters of the book on each ride-That book was awesome. The point is, when you start small, like the image of the mustard seed-smallest of all seeds- eventually growing- into the biggest garden plant- you end up going big.

So just imagine a big goal in your ministry, and start it small. You may want to evangelize a whole school, so start by praying for 3 spiritually hungry students who have the skills that could compliment your ministry.

You could want to start a new business as a Deacon that will revolutionize mission. Start by reading a couple of pages of a business focused book that can teach you better skills. Whatever your goal is, scale it down to a small version, and let that build up in time.

Whatever your goal is, I pray it becomes big, and it plays out like a wonderful story written by God. Amen

“Faith makes all things possible… love makes all things easy,” Dwight L. Moody

The evangelist Dwight L. Moody was a one of the most important revivalists in modern Christian history. Often considered the first mass evangelist, Moody gave 19th century America a lasting example of mass evangelism and education when he committed over 5000 college students and turned them into missionaries one university at a time.

The battle cry that led to such spirited evangelism among the youth was “all should go and go to all,” according to A.T. Pierson. Moody’s strategy for evangelism was to gather a large amount of students and teach them intensively. Moody was known as a simple person who maintained a high view of Scripture, great faith in prayer, and strict focus on mission. He was a man who always sought for the Holy Spirit and longed for greater spiritual power.

During an open youth summer conference Moody organized, 151 students attended. Although the conference seemed like an average retreat with Bible studies and fellowship, prayer groups eventually allowed it to spark a movement of missionaries among the students. By the end of the conference, 100 of those students gave their lives to serve world mission.

One of Moody’s disciples, John R. Mott, led a world-wide movement called “Student Volunteer Movement,” (SVM). This organization allowed for more students with mission interests to gather often for prayer, Bible studies, and conferences. Moody, Mott, and their co-workers continued to travel to over 150 universities to find, train and dispatch missionaries with great zeal. Eventually, they evangelized thousands of students who later would bare fruits in mission fields around the world.

Beyond the number of missionaries that were born through Moody’s mass gatherings and conferences, a new movement of lay mission was circulating. All interested students could volunteer through SVM and other similar organizations were growing to allow for all kinds of people to participate in mission. Moody himself was not ordained or formally educated in theology. And therefore, he encouraged the participation of every kind of person and opened the doors of the church to everyone.

Although mission around the world generally began to fade after World War I, the mass evangelism movement of students sparked a historic and influential interest in mission during that era. Moody’s evangelistic approach and revival is sometimes referred to as the “Third Great Awakening.”

“Without higher education, he founded three schools. Without theological training, he reshaped Victorian Christianity. Without radio or television, he reached 100 million people,” Christian History Magazine posted about Moody. Similarly, in today’s world, millions can be reached in one effort and be caught in the net of the truth for the advancement of the Gospel.

James 1:13-15 – When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

John 10:27 – My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

Hebrews 12:22 – fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Jimmy, the excited 7-year-old soccer player swiftly gained possession of the ball, ran as fast as he could with a roaring crowd behind him cheering what he couldn’t understand at the moment. They yelled and yelled as he dashed in and scored.
It was such a big moment for him, so joyful, so joyful that even the other team celebrated with him, but for different reasons. The only issue is, he scored on the wrong goal. He was so excited for the game that he couldn’t see his coach trying to redirect him. His eyes were just focused on the moment of getting the ball and scoring. This can be our image as Christians, but the repercussions are far more weightier than a bit of embarrassment.

The Apostle James lays before our eyes a very vivid picture of the process of temptation. We learn many things from this, but to be brief, we look at the fact that being tempted isn’t wrong. It’s not the sin in of itself. But it leads to sin.
Like the story of the child scoring on the wrong goal, a study of the Greek helps us see that sin(hamartia)is a lot like what he did- missed the mark. So how do we appropriately hit the mark? Like little Jimmy would have benefited from, we listen to the voice of the one trying to direct us, ie we fix our focus on him-Jesus.

Though the temptations around us may seem sweet like the excitement of scoring a goal, if what we’re trying to do takes us away from Christ, it’s not really a gain at all. In the end, we need to hold onto the face that no matter the sweetest sin, God is better.

“Individualism is the spirit of American life,” one writer declared. Many people have flooded into America with hopes of achieving the “American dream,” which capitalizes on ones hope for success, individual gain, and use of ones own individual rights and liberties. The US has propagated the idea that becoming successful in life is based on ones own ability to stand out and make a way for themselves to grow as they need to. American culture is influenced by this kind of thinking.

Unfortunately, churches in America have also fallen into the temptation of individualism. Christians often express their faith as an individualistic and personal matter that may or may not involve corporate worship or community accountability. Recently, a report from Barna Group suggested that while many people in the US claim to be Christians, only 21% of those Christians believe that a faith community was necessary for spiritual maturity. Essentially, studies indicate that Christians in the US focus on “me and God.” “God” can be whoever you want Him to be. There is no sense or need for community because faith is a personal affair.

Evangelical Churches in the 20th century suggested a great paradox when the idea of a “personal relationship with Jesus Christ,” began to develop. Liberal Christians also spread the notion that Christians should battle against injustices in the community by fighting for individual human rights. Nearly every kind of church in the US contributed to the American church idea of individualism.

How then can such Americans be discipled? There should be a change in the culture of churches so that people may also understand what is a true church community and what is necessary to be a true follower of Christ.

Many churches believe that a person attending service frequently is discipleship. If a person comes and listens and even donates money, they still have not been discipled. Discipleship is a transformed way of life.

“When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die,” Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes in his book “the Cost of Discipleship.” A disciples is the one who not only hears the call, but responds and walks with Jesus on the path of the cross. That person dies and lives newly, rebaptized by the truth.

Average people need help to live daily as a Christian. Pastors, ministers, and church members should be the ones who can guide disciples on the path towards total transformation and rebirth. Discipleship is a group effort that requires the prayer and guidance of the church community, the determination of the student, and the work of the Holy Spirit. Individualism makes people accountable to themselves. But true discipleship in a circle of love where everyone watches over the other in love.

While personal faith and a personal relationship with God is very important, churches in America should also learn the culture of a discipleship community. AM chapters are exhorted to raise leaders and missionaries who not only have religious belief but also religious practices that reveal love and a hope for God’s Kingdom.

John 10:2-3,5

The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice, But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.

1 John 3:1

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

There was a video Father introducing his son to the child’s uncle. The encounter seemed normal enough if you ignore the fact the Father and his brother were twins. The hilarious encounter, where the child couldn’t seem to understand how there were “two daddies,” brought the family lot’s of amusement, but it also conjured thoughts of the word’s of Jesus and his disciple, John.

Christian’s encounter many who “have an appearance of godliness,” but aren’t truly reflecting that from within. Thanks be to God for that still small voice, that gentle and humble calling we hear from our Lord, our Shepherd, Jesus.

As scripture tells us, he is the “the image of the invisible God,” Colossians 1:15, and if and when we know him, we have known and seen God the Father as well. Through the Life and words of Jesus, we get the greatest, most vivid revelation of our Father, and through Jesus, we will not be easily fooled.

If ever we have any issues, feel we can’t hear him, we should pray and seek. What good Father doesn’t want his children to know and love him?

Throughout the scriptures, we see apologetics in one form or another.

The explicit call to the practice is first found in the words of Peter. Revering Jesus as Lord, we prepare the argument but, as He lived with his humble and gentleness, we do this the same.

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” 1 Peter 3:15 NIV

Apologetics at the time of the original church heavily relied on arguing for the hope in the Gospel via first testament scripture that pointed to truths Saints lived by. Paul often did this via epistles.

Two examples of this are firstly found in the massive text of Acts 7:2-50 where Stephen essentially teaches a refresher course on the scriptures. But another, more brief example is found below:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed- a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17 NIV

Footnotes are a blessing for us who aren’t as familiar with the scriptures. We can clearly see this Old Testament base for Paul’s argument.

An exception to scripture basis is when the audience lacked prior knowledge of said scripture.

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Romans 1:18-20 NIV

In other places Paul even quotes non-believer writers popular to the culture of his audience, using their work as a vehicle to get them to the destination of Christ.

For us who seek to follow the call Peter gave to give the answer the hope we have, we have the position of nature, and even most of the social sciences that are just now catching up, coming to their senses seeing the truths many of the things the Word has said for so very long.

But that’s for mom believers. Now, as sad as the very fact that people can lack faith in God is true, that’s not the worse thing. The worse thing is when the believer in God need to be taught or have simple truths in the very word they claim to live by used to argue for the way they should live. This was the case with the Pharisees, and today with many lost sheep.

This is essentially preaching. Christians today use both Testaments to often argue why we have this hope and live by it, and why other Christians should, too.

The typical idea many have is that you have to either believe the Bible or you have to believe in Science.

Paul said in Romans 1:20: For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

The issue with this is, any open-minded person who actually looks at the universe would have to be filled with awe and then wonder, and then ponder how it all came to be, right?

This is what C.S Lewis meant when he once said: “supposing science ever became complete so that it knew every single thing in the whole universe.” Anyone can suppose a God, perhaps not using that name, but the elaborate design we see in everything, especially the things science exams definitely implies for a designer just as a son implies a Father. The thing arrogant disbelievers often hold so close to their heart- science- actually proves the thing they claim doesn’t exist. Science does not disprove God, religion or anything of nature. it just proves that there’s someone behind it.

Take any book, a piece of art, a lovely garment of clothing, a system of science. Someone thought and worked on it. Science is complex and elaborate- how can intelligent thought not be behind it? How can one marvel at science, filled with so much awe in their mind not be able to say that there must be a deep mind behind it? Once we argue this point and meet humility in those that oppose it, we have the grounds to ask them why they think this universe, this world, their very lives even exist.
